Moving from timeslot (synchronous) to packet based
(asynchronous) networks provides some challenges.

FTI commissioned a CASE EPSRC Research project
at the University of Warwick to investigate primarily
the shortcomings of Ethernet when used for critical
applications, in particular Aviation Ground
Infrastructure. The PhD work resulted in a Patent
being filed for the 'Control of Packets in a Network'.

There is the expectation of improved packet throughput
over Radio (including 5G), lower delays over the
Internet and in a LAN/WAN; inherent layer of security,
determinism and synchronisation.
